Add Fresh Vegetables And Fruit To Your Meals More Often.

Ways to Maintain Good Nutrition

Eat breakfast each day.

  • Try something new for breakfast such as oatmeal or bran cereal with fat free milk, whole grain waffles or pancakes, whole grain bread with peanut butter and fat free yogurt with granola.

Look at how much you eat.

  • Read food labels for serving sizes.

  • Serve on smaller plates or bowls and not out of the food package.

Add fresh vegetables and fruit to your meals more often.

  • Try more types of fresh vegetables and fruits. For kids, replace the candy bowl or cookie jar with a plate of washed, cut up fresh fruit.

  • Frozen or canned types that are plain (no added salt, heavy syrups, and sauces) can be a good choice too. Tips: you can rinse and drain the canned types.

Cut back on salty and high fat foods.

  • Chips, crackers, cheeses and processed meats such as hot dogs, bacon and sausage are high in fat and salt. Try plain nuts or vegetable pieces as healthful snacks.

Why Eat Fresh Vegetables and Fruit Each Day?

Fruits and vegetables are natural fast foods.

  • Eating fruits and vegetables every day reduces the risk of cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses.

  • Cancer, heart disease, and stroke are the leading causes of death in this country.

  • All 3 diseases can be caused by diets high in fat and not eating enough fruits and vegetables.

Fruits and vegetables are:

  • A great way to lower your risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

  • Are tasty, low in salt and fat.

  • Provide fiber, vitamins and minerals.

  • Easy and quick to take on the road or eat at home.
