Tips to Prevent COVID-19

What is Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)?

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a recently discovered coronavirus. It is a new strain of respiratory coronavirus that has not been found in humans before. COVID-19 was first found in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China in December 2019. COVID-19 is now a pandemic that has spread widely in the United States and many countries around the world.

How can you protect yourself and others from COVID-19?

Right now, there is no vaccine to prevent a COVID-19 infection.

Do these things to protect yourself and others:

  • Know how it spreads
  • Wash your hands often
  • Avoid close contact
  • Wear a cloth face covering or face mask when you go out in public
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Clean and disinfect things you touch every day

Should you wear a face mask?

The CDC recommends that you wear cloth face coverings — or face masks — in public settings where social distancing is hard to do, such as grocery stores or pharmacies. Face masks help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. The U.S. Surgeon General shares a simple way to make a cloth face mask here.

The CDC has more details, including how to clean it here.

Face masks and cloth face coverings are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must be reserved for health care workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance.
